Beware Plurkdenity Theft!
This is a guest-post by Ruggsymuggs, a proud citizen of the Plurkiverse and now the record holder for the youngest guest poster on this site.
As you may have heard, the citizens of the Plurkiverse have been caught up in a predicament over the last few days (and hours). I have heard rumors of many conspiracies that may be afoot as you read this. Could it really be a hacker hacker on steroids is loose in the Plurk system, or is this problem just a minor bug that can be quickly swatted by Mr.T and his crew?
Plurkdenity theft may be defined as the act of plurking as someone else, after having gained access to a Plurker’s account.. Why people want to do things like this is rhetorical question. Some people just do. Still, Plurkdentity theft is a risk. How would you feel if you were happily Plurking around and suddenly saw yourself saying things that you never intended to say, and over which you have no control. Something like that could make you feel more than a little helpless!
This is the danger we are facing! Even as a believer in the rights of free speech, it is apparent to me that the boundaries are being overstepped. No one wants to be the victim of a Plurk-hacker. We are all here to have fun, and things like this are far from fun! It seems that one of the Plurkdentity hackers is yungsang, who was caught in the act. Please do not befriend yungsang, and whatever you do, don’t click on any link he sends you!
Even with this issue going on, I feel that I must give a hand to everyone at the PlurkCast. I love it so much! It is one of the highlights of every week for me. All of you really entertaining, and I think it is great that you guys are doing this for the Plurk community. I hope you succeed in every way with the PluckCast. Also a round of applause for all of the great people working to build Plurker for us I just can’t wait to start to use it!
I’m Ruggsymuggs. Be careful out there. It can be a dangerous plurking world.

I’m wondering now how “exclusive” the custom user names are. For ex. if I reach a certain karma level can I use any custom user name even if it is the actual name of a plurk user? I can see how this privilege can be potentially abused without having to hack into an account.

This is rather disturbing news! So how exactly are they able to get gain access to my account? Are they hacking the Plurk databases or are people giving their passwords out? I for one would like a little more clarification on what exactly I should be protecting.

@digitaltodd - It would appear, on the evidence, that he resurrected an old hacker trick, writing a Web page that steals your session ID out of a cookie. They can use that temporary ID to get into your account. They never have your password, but they can still act as you. Logging out, erasing your cookies, and logging back in will get you a fresh, safe, session ID. That does not, of course, diminish the problems!
@jane - I have wondered the same myself and was almost afraid to bring it up. It would be pretty easy for them to check and see if it’s in use. Give it a try!

I hate peeps like that. The ruin the fun for everybody! It’s just like those annoying followers at Twitter… I can understand people getting a kick out of hacking into something, because i do some hacking here and there myself. On a professional base that is:) And it really does make you feel good when you got it going! But it is just plain lame to do things like this. I think people like that are just in there to spam. But when they hacked your account, my friends might think i went into the business of penis enlargements…
Anyway, it just pisses me of when things like that happen. Hope it won’t happen again!
