Plurkitudes
It has been interesting to watch the reactions people have had while Plurk has been going through a few problems recently. You can tell a lot about people by the way they react to the problems of other people, and what you find out is not always pleasant. Fortunately, most of the time it is a good experience. I suppose that a range of attitudes is to be expected, given the wide variety of people that Plurk.
Just going on Plurks and responses, there is one group of apparently perfect people on Plurk. When Plurk is having a problem, they bitch and moan as if they have never made a mistake, let people down, or otherwise been less than paragons of perfection. This group of people has either led a charmed life and never had a problem (NOT!), or is quite out of touch with reality. All they care about is themselves and getting what they want.
There is a smaller, louder group that can be defined as misanthropes. This group takes advantage of any Plurk problem to go on a rampage about how lousy the site and service has always been. Some of these people further prove their misanthropy by doing their best to stick it to reasonable people who understand the problems and just go with the flow, calling them apologists, and worse. There are always “superior” people that hate, purely hate, and these are them.
But the vast majority of Plurkers have had problems, have caused problems, and have the ability to be honest with themselves. They might be disappointed that Plurk is unavailable, or is working goofily, but they understand. The majority is neither nasty nor mean, and are even sometimes downright cheerful in the face of a little adversity. They might say they wish that the service was available, but they don’t say nasty things about Plurk, or about other positive-minded Plurkers.
It’s not very difficult to figure out which group you want to hang with. The mean and nasty bitchers and whiners won’t last long in a real-life group, except as desperate hangers-on. I see no reason to have much to do with people that have a wide vindictive streak, so I am paring down the people I follow. I don’t have much patience for the consistently mean, self-impressed, nasty, whining, vindictive, or misanthropic Plurkers. Screw them. They’re gone.
There are a lot of intelligent, feeling, decent human beings on Plurk. That is where the enjoyment is. Those people are the reason that I Plurk. I am incredibly glad that this group is 95% of Plurkdom and that it will soon be 100% of my friends. I will not put up with idiots and assholes in non-virtual life, and I see no reason to put up with them on Plurk.
I’m KDFrawg on Plurk. Stop by and say, “Howdy.” But don’t stop by to bitch or whine.

Amen to all that you said. I cringe every time there is a Plurk hiccup because it is invariably followed by a rash of whiny posts on Plurk. I think these people should stop and remember that Plurk is a free service. Plurk is a privilege, not a right,
My goal on Plurk is to have fun. If I have someone in my timeline who does nothing but spew negativity, you can be darn sure that individual will be un-followed!

Some of the misanthropes should spend a day on Twitter and see what a crappy service looks like. The A-Team obviously cares more about their service.

Loves Plurk and the all the peeps I have met there. I wouldn’t trade my laughs (daily) for anything. I think the A-team has done a tremendous job w/ Plurk and is to be commended. As for the negativity I just ignore it for the most part and if I gets too overwhelming that friend must go I’m afraid. I’m just there for the friends, relaxation and good times.

I guess I must be lucky. I’m already pretty selective with my friends, and I think the 40 or so I have are pretty damn cool. The worst I’ve read were things like “I missed Plurk when it was down.” And that’s not even a negative thing. It’s a positive, showing how much people love Plurk.
I’m not perfect and I don’t expect my services to be. Now, if it gets to be the way twitter was for months, I wouldn’t blame people for bitching. But the odd hiccup here and there is to be expected with growing pains and should be tolerated with a smile.

Some hiccups are part of being an early adopter. Plurk has had fewer than most. Plurk is fun and responsive. Kudos to the A-team!

Love it, I have a writing project i been working on and its similar topic to this. I am interested as It is the first time I have taken the time to write/rewrite/etc. I think you are absolutely right though. Why have garbage ruin the good things in your timeline and make you miss those you know. =D
I think the A-Team has a philosophy on this because if you notice they fan a lot of people and friend a few. Seems to me if they do it then they must be doing something right.

Great article in spirit of Social Media… I accept that Plurk and Twitter have problems, due to their bugs, or too much spammers, so we have to understand that are problems and will be fixed in future…

I am always relieved when it comes back on, is all. Just happy to have it back. Every program has issues ie Twitter. This one is worth the down time. V

I admit, I have complained when it’s been down…but it’s not meant as mean-spirited…I just MISS it.
I hope that I have not offended anyone with my whining? If so, I apologize and will try to hold my tongue in the future.

Nice post KDFrawg and so very true. It is interesting how peoples lights shine sometimes brighter than they know themselves through Social Media sites and you pick up well on it too.
I admit to having followed & plurked over some of the down-times experienced but more out of curiosity and education of what is happening more than anything.
In my opinion, every down time has had its benefits. We are often brought closer together when we return and in most instances (as experienced with the recent maintenance) positive happenings have occurred in the land of Plurk.
The ‘1 hour maintenance’ that led on to being 11 hours or so was a little sanding but necessary for the future developments in Plurkland… of which, I am looking greatly forward to.
So, to all the good-times, down-times and times in between.
I thank you Plurk and thank you to you too, KDFrawg. Keep up the great work!

I think overall we have a great community created in “our” part of Plurk.
Sometimes, it is easy to forget of the 50,000~ people listed as signed up for a Plurk account, we only have a small number of those as ‘friends’.
I have really enjoy that small number and it is still great finding new friends via older friends or from new friend requests. I’ve had some this past week whom become friends and am Happy for it. (if you read this you know whom you are
)
But, some of our friends do go on about Karma or other down topics,(not talking about the Oh plurk was down, and it’s great to be back or what changed plurks) and I agree they could be the ones to stop following their plurks. But, also I weigh their ‘normal’ plurks. Like you said; would i want them around in the ‘real’ world.
For those whom do the Karma plurk(good or bad); we have to remember we were there once. In the Golden age of Dancing Banana’s and reaching that next level.
After using Plurk for awhile, we can hope those that plurk about losing Karma will come to feel that Plurk is about the Plurk and not the Karma.(As I think a lot of us has have) If not, we control their plucks in our timeline and we know what that means.
Sorry if this went on too long or doesn’t make sense.
I want to say I enjoy this post and all the other posts which kdfrawg has posted; the dad of plurk brings a voice of reason to the madness/addiction that is Plurkville.
Thank you for your time.
Rant over.

Oh, and I see the little green frawg is back. Great!

I guess I got lucky and landed in the great group of Plurkers. I’ve seen very little bitching and moaning about the few times Plurk’s been down. And ya know…the more I Plurk and get to know people there, the more I love it! There definitely are some wonderful people on there.

My only complaint is the lack of communication when they are having a problem. I don’t know if it is on my end or if Plurk dev is having a problem. There are many side-channels they could use to tell us what the problem is. Many of us are computer geeks and understand a problem. I just wish they would respond to contact forms and such.
They could post on another site when they are down, for example” the customer service/support site. or even a couple of sentences on their error page when that is available.
